SEO explained

What is SEO?

SEO is an acronym for "Search Engine Optimization", it's the way your site gets free, natural/organic traffic from the text content on your site. Another way to think of it is, how your site earns traffic and gets to the top search results because of it's content, how frequently it's updated, and the quality sites that link to your site (quality backlinks).
An important thing to keep in mind is that each search engine has it's own standards for "good" SEO, and each search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo etc) can change those standards at any time, so try to keep up to date as much as possible or just keep your site filled with quality content.

5 Ways to Improve your Site's SEO:

  • 1) Relevant Content, quality content will great improve your site's SEO, one good base (at least at the time this was written) is to do your best to create your site with quality content that is relevant to your site's niche/topic.
  •
  • 2) Alt Tags, alt tags are most commonly used with images, another important note is to name images appropriately, search engines love text that often gets lost in images, so use "alt tags" with your images and name your images with mini descriptions search engines can pick up.
    Example:

  •
  • 3) Quality Links, links that lead back to your site are known as Backlinks, when quality sites link back to your sites this improves your SEO.
  •
  • 4) Regular updates, updating your site regularly with good content can greatly boost your SEO.
  •
  • 5) Metadata, having your site's metadata setup is quick and great for SEO. Metadata is found in your <head></head> tags. This is an example:

Web Graphics

Make A Living Loving It Web Graphics

Now that the ball is really rolling, you may need or want some graphics to really make the content on your website pop and and really attract clients. It has been proven time and time again that visuals increase profits and revenue. Some clients need some visual enticement to help them make a purchase. There are many free and paid options available, but understanding a little about graphics, the file types, their sizes and color modes is always helpful. You don't have to be a graphic master but understanding the basics about web images will be very helpful in the long run when growing your business, as well will end up saving you time and money.

Files sizes are something very important to keep in mind as you always want the sharpest image with the smallest file size for quick loading times on your site or ad campaign, so few people will wait for an image to load on a page.

Fiverr.com

  • Your Logo:

  • One of the graphics or visuals that will be most important to your success is your logo, you will want to have an image that identifies you and that your customers will associate only you with, essentially it's giving you your own brand. Having a logo helps give potential clients confidence in what you are selling or the service you're providing because it gives you a professional polished look.
You can create your own logo if you're confident and know what you, there is free software to create the look you want. Or you can hire a freelancer or buy a ready made logo that is unique.
  • Free Graphic Design Software:

  • (Create your own logo!)
  • Affordable Logo/Graphics Solutions:

  • Affordable Royalty Free Images:

  • (Ensure the images you use on your site are royalty free or that you have the right to use them, if not you may get into trouble by the image owner.)

Graphic Basics

  • DPI (dots per inch):

  • With web graphics an images' DPI is quite important, you want to ensure that you have a dpi (dots per inch) of 72dpi which is standard for screen/web and keeps the file size small and quick to load when on your webpage, on a computer and mobile device. You may have heard of 300dpi this is for print and really increases the file size and load time to view the image online (long loading and heavy images can cause people to avoid your website and miss out on your product/service).
  • Color Mode:

  • Color mode is the color setting of your image, it can come in RGB, CMYK, INDEXED, and Greyscale.
    • CMYK (cyan,, magenta, yellow, black) is more for print jobs
    • RGB(red, green, blue) is most commonly used for web images, it's a name is made up of "#" and a series of letters or numbers, you can see a useful example of a RGB color picker here.
    • Indexed used to describe reduced color mapping of 8-bit or less(simple colors) useful in reducing file size.
    • Greyscale is used for black and white images and if you don't need color this color mode is great because it reduces file size.
  • Recommended Image File Formats for Web:

  • There are tons of file formats when you hear about digital graphic in general but when dealing with web graphics, you'll want to keep these 3 in use for compatibility ease of use:
    • JPEG or JPG is short for Joint Photographic Experts Group:
This format seems to be the most universal, it's very "lossy" (means it has lost most of the original graphical data and file size is lighter).
    • GIF: (Graphics Interchange Format)
Small file size with few colors, supports transparency and can do simple animations - Animate GIF.
    • PNG (Portable Network Graphics):
2 types of PNG png-8 (better on light-white backgrounds) & png-24 Both allow for transparent backgrounds but png-24 is better quality and has a slightly larger size.
